THE RETURN OF THE POPE: The pope will give up the papacy, as he moves into a new role as a priest, according to a new Vatican decree.
The new papacy will come after the pontiff is canonized in April 2020.
But the papal successor will also be given the power to direct the Vatican’s finances and be given unprecedented powers to address the church’s finances, including an authority to suspend church finances and to set their limits.
Pope Francis will take up the mantle of archbishop emeritus in 2020, when the new pontiff becomes pope.
The new pope will be named in 2020.
