An English priest was sentenced to five years in jail after stealing his fiancé’s ring from a church wedding reception.
Bishop John McArthur of the Anglican Diocese of Dunedin was found guilty of theft of religious property in October, the New Zealand Herald reports.
A jury took just under an hour to find him guilty of stealing a ring valued at more than $400 and three bracelets worth more than the ring.
He had claimed they were his own property.
He was ordered to pay the woman’s compensation and serve three months in prison.
The case sparked widespread criticism of the justice system and an online petition calling for Bishop McArthur to be jailed.
